Legislative Branch

 

The legislative branch in Iowa is made up of the Iowa House of Representatives which has 100 members and the Iowa Senate, with 50 members.  Members of the Iowa House are elected every two years while members of the Iowa Senate are elected every four years. 

The legislative branch passes laws that are agreed to by 51 members of the Iowa House and 26 member of the Iowa Senate.  These laws are subject to the approval or veto of the Governor.

The Iowa General Assembly is scheduled to meet for 110 days in odd years starting on the 2nd Monday of January.  In even years the General Assembly is scheduled to meet for 100 days starting on the 2nd Monday of January as well.
